Adventures in Kentucky Part 1: The Kentucky State Fair

Now that we have a new memory card reader to upload the pictures from our camera, it's time to do a couple updates on our latest Kentucky adventures!

Our first adventure took place last Saturday, August 29th, at the Kentucky State Fair.  The website calls it an "11 day sensory overload" and I must say, it definitely lived up to its billing.  We parked our car and as we started walking to what we believed to be the "entrance" into the fair, we were offered a ride by the Kentucky State Fair Shuttle. . . a tractor.  We were dropped off at the "last stop" and as we walked into the first indoor exhibit we were welcomed by the first "sensory overload" the fresh smell of. . . sheep!  And lots of them!  As we walked by the sheep, we noticed a bunch of them tied up and preparing to go into a competition.  Then all of a sudden one of them starts peeing right where he's standing. . . for what seemed to be two straight minutes!  I guess he was pretty nervous about the competition!

After making our way through the next two exhibits (cows and pigs [manure included]), we stopped to watch three adorable Border Collies "herd" a group of five terrified ducks.  When we exited what we thought to be the last live animal exhibit, we realized we had entered the arena hosting the "World's Championship Horse Show".  I wanted to go outside and get some fried food, but Cami insisted we at least watch some of it. . . just to say that we've been to a horse show in Kentucky.  So we went in, watched some horses prance around for a couple minutes and decided that fried food was a better way to overload our senses.

Cami let me decide on our first food stop and being the healthy, heart-conscious person I am, I picked vegetables -- fried vegetables!  Fried broccoli, fried cauliflower, fried onions, fried pickles and fried green tomatoes!  Great way to make a whole bunch of healthy foods totally unhealthy!  After consuming 7,500 calories of vegetables, batter, oil and ranch dressing, we decided to walk around some more inside the exhibits.  The highlights included a cake exhibit, different craft exhibits and my favorite. . . a hay exhibit.
Our next stop was the food court where Cami chose a fried trout sandwich (yep, more fried food). Then we headed outside for what was probably the entertainment highlight of the day, the Pork Chop Revue!

We ended our time at the fair deciding if we were going to eat the animal we just saw and order a BBQ pork butt on a stick or a smoked turkey leg.  We opted for the smoked turkey leg (which was quite delicious) and then we headed back home. . . to pass out from fried food coma!

  2. Oooh! Kentucky State Fair! :D Being the overly happy and ligthearted person I am, all I can think of in response to this is, "Wow, how in the world do you judge a bale of hay?" and "Yaaayy... Greg and Cami are now halfway towards their triple bypass surgeries!" Haha, mucho amor. <3

  3. a HAY exhibit? hahaa... awesome! I guess that your time at the Kentucky state fair was pretty different than the normal California state fair that I went to this past weekend. :) Did they have blooming onions?
