Friends from Afar

The amount of recent posting should give you a hint that it is now summer break and we're back in business due to the extra time in conjunction with the inspiring impetus from a visit from two people we love dearly. A couple of weeks ago we received a couple of "'A' recruits": Tranwei and Abijah Yu with the task to wine and dine them into loving Southern and Louisville! Here is a synopsis of too much fun:

Wednesday evening the Yu's flew in and Greg had the house all prepped with piping hot chicken divan, mashed potatoes and other yummy foods. We let them settle in and stayed up talking and catching up until way too late into the night!

On Thursday and Friday the days were packed full of experiencing Seminary life and exploring Louisville. Although I still had work, I was able to grab some meals with them while Greg between classes took them to explore some of our Louisville favorites including Cherokee Park, downtown Louisville and the Seminary campus (and Cocoa's Cafe to bring me a yummy cupcake and truffles!).

I think TW and Bij went to more classes in two days than most Seminoids attend in one week! The evenings were entertaining as well including a buy one get one free sundae from Graeters and Cami beating Greg at Wii (while TW and Bij were dining and desserting at the Mohler's house!).

After staying up into the college hours we were able to sleep in on Saturday (I, the sleep mongerer, slept the longest) and have a tummy filling breakfast before heading off toward Cincinnatti to visit the Creation Museum. I was a little nervous that the museum was going to end up a little lame but I am so glad I was so very wrong! We spent the first bit outside exploring the beautiful gardens (Bij and I were particularly captivated by the dazzling tulips). Nonetheless, after doing some cheezy couples poses, the boys were thrilled when we encountered an agressive peacock bum rushing some poor roosters. After being overly entertained by some harrassed chickens we entered the petting zoo where we saw a wallaby, some zorses (zebra horse mix) and I got to feed a camel (it was gross and slobbery...).

Inside, the museum is set up to go through the "7 C's" which describe the big events that have (or will) effect the universe: Creation, Corruption, Catastrophe, Confusion, Christ, Cross, Consummation. I was at first skeptical because of the cheesy animatronic cave people in the entrance, but after stepping inside I was totally blown away. Not only do they relay facts about creation, the fall, the flood and babel but they do so in a Christ-exhalting, scripture based, forward-looking manner that was truly an encouragement to the soul. I went in with so many questions (especially about the flood and carbon dating, fossil records, natural selection, etc.) and not only had my presuppositions altered, but was deeply impacted by how all things point to not only a magnificent creator, but the need for a savior. One of the highlights was that the first large chunk was solely on the importance of scripture and how it has been attacked over the years. I also enjoyed the display of the ark and the attention to detail that was shown. I also loved how at the very end they showed a really clear gospel presentation about how Christ fulfills all the groanings of Creation including sinful man's own heart. If you ever want to know more about creation or how to teach about creation (including dinosaurs!) visit http://www.answersingenesis.org/ Dr. Mohler does quite a few articles in their magazine and Grace Church has even hosted Ken Ham at their evening service! Greg and TW were particularly impressed with the gift shop that boasted not only dinosaur paraphernalia, but also Puritan classics!

After a wonderful day at the museum we headed with rumbling stomachs to our next destination: Claudia Sander's Dinner House (yes, that is the wife of the dear KFC Colonel). We were led into a plantation style house into a huge dinning room filled with the aromas of good ole Southern home cooking. What was only pure fantasy was now becoming reality and we had to put our chicken where our mouth was. How many all-you-can-eat chicken pieces can you really put down? I ambitiously thought I could do maybe 3 without eating any sides, but when those homemade yeast rolls came out I couldn't but help myself to some. After being wowed by the bread, corn pudding, chicken and dumplings (my fav), mock oysters (I still don't know what was in this!), Baked Apples, Harvard Beets, Green Beans, Breaded Stewed Tomatoes, Creamed Spinach (a fan favorite) & Mashed Potatoes the main attraction came out. All you can eat juicy, crispy friend chicken, just the way the Colonel liked it. In the end score came out: Tranwei- 8.5 pieces, Greg- 6 pieces, Abijah- 3.5, Cami- 0.75. For shame! But in my defense I had white meat which was at least one and a half times larger than all those dinky drumsticks. Next time I'll order from the kid's menu....

On the Lord's day they were able to participate in worship with us at Baxter and meet our new church family. After church we got to have girl/guy time and I was able to sequester Bij into the Pie Kitchen to enjoy a nice tete-a-tete. Then we spent the rest of the day getting some much needed rest and relaxation, playing dominion and killer bunnies (Bij was the deadliest of all!) and just enjoying one another's fellowship and friendship.
On Monday our friends were forced to depart, but not after attending their last class in the morning. Apparently jet lag and late nights were not on their side.

Although it was a fast trip packed to the brim we were so thankful for their visit! It was refreshing to the soul to be able to get a taste of home (both from the yummy Trader Joe's food they brought and from the good ole Sactown humor). Life has certainly calmed down since the gunshot visit, but we are praying for you both that God will continue to lead you to where He wants you to learn, grow and serve in the next few years of seminary. Until we meet again!
