We have seen our share of quizzical looks from people when we tell them we're moving to Kentucky to attend the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. A lot of people have heard of Dallas Theological Seminary, The Master's Seminary, Talbot Seminary and Fuller Seminary. But it seems as though most of our Californian friends haven't heard of Southern Seminary.
For some people the name "Al Mohler" turns on a light bulb in their minds. Dr. Albert Mohler is the ninth president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (or SBTS). He is also the man that God has used to reestablish SBTS as a theologically conservative institution.
For other people, the name "Al Mohler" is just as foreign as the name "Southern Seminary". If you are one of these people, here are a couple quick facts about Southern.
- It was founded in 1859 (which means 2009 marks the 150th anniversary)
- It is the flagship seminary of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC)
- Total enrollment at the seminary is over 4,500 students
- It is connected with Boyce College named after James P. Boyce (co-founder and first president of SBTS)
