Fair Food and Fine Art

The first full weekend of October in Louisville marks the annual St. James Court Art Show.  The official website describes the event as such:
Held in the heart of historic Old Louisville among the country's largest collection of Victorian homes, the St. James Court Art Show® has for over five decades provided our neighborhood, city and state with a rich cultural and artistic legacy.

After looking for parking, Cami and I arrived at the art show and were greeted by a city of tents.  There were artists and craftsmen (or craftswomen) selling all sorts of things.  Handmade jewelry, wood carvings, oil paintings, glass bird-feeders, tie-dye dresses, clay sculptures, metal work, and more.

We quickly found that the exhibits that most attracted us were those of photography, especially those of scenery.  One photographer and his wife work exclusively in China and some of the pictures were amazing.  One of the most unique artists we found combined photography and painting.  She would mount a scenic photo and then paint on the mounting a continuation of the photograph.  Her husband told us that she finishes about 7-8 pieces a year and spends at least a hundred hours on each piece of art!

The art show spanned roughly 10 blocks in a really neat and historic residential neighborhood.  The streets were filled with college students wearing U of L sweatshirts, families pushing strollers and chasing after their kids and older couples (who were probably doing most of the buying!)  The most interesting part of the art show, however, was in the food.  We expected to see some "artists" selling their "edible artwork" like chocolate or baked goods, but as we moved toward the center of the art show we fond a block of tents selling fair food!  There were vendors selling corn dogs and funnel cakes, some selling gyros and schwarmas, and others selling all sorts of drinks from local beers to fine Californian wines!  Imagine that: someone buying a $5.00 corn dog and $1500 artwork...all on the same block!

But the best part of the afternoon was that our bank account came out unscathed!  We saw a few pictures that we really liked, but almost everything was out of our price range.  So we just walked around, enjoyed the art, soaked in the beautiful weather and the interesting mix of people and drove home.  Now that is my kind of date. . . and we didn't even have to pay for parking. =)
