(In an attempt to revive the blog, we are going to begin posting some
key milestones from the pregnancy on the blog as we await the arrival
of our little girl!)
First of Many - Our First Doctor's Appointment
On Wednesday, Nov 16, 2011, nearly three weeks after we had any indication that we were expecting, we headed to Advocates for Women's Health to meet with Dr. Alecia Graves. During those three weeks, while 90 percent of me believed that Cami truly was pregnant, 10 percent of me continued to wonder, "How in the world can a little stick with some pee on it tell you that a baby is forming in the womb?" Much to Cami's relief, that visit to the doctor soundly destroyed the remaining 10 percent of my unbelief.
After what seemed to be an hour of very little activity -- aside from filling out paperwork, peeing in a cup, taking Cami's weight and blood pressure, and attempting to study for Greek -- we were ushered into the office to meet Dr. Graves. She gave us some basic information and after we had exhausted all our questions, she whisked us off to meet the most important person in the office -- the sonogram technician.
After prepping Cami, the sonogram tech turned off the lights and we began to fix our attention on a little screen in the top-left corner of the room. After what seemed to be an eternity, the first image of our baby girl appeared and Cami whispered the words, "It's real!" (Which I believe was a subtle way of telling me, "See, I told you so!") The sonogram tech pointed out the heartbeat, the umbilical cord, four little stubs (also known as arms and legs) and even her developing eyes. As we continued to marvel at the little one developing in Cami's womb, the sonogram tech printed out a dozen pictures and stuffed them in an envelop for us to take home.
We were taken back into the exam room and Dr. Graves checked in with us to let us know that everything looked great and that the estimated due date from her measurements is June 25, 2012. And then we headed home, stopping at Five Guys to celebrate God's gift to us!
Here's an excerpt from Cami's journal on that date:
11/16/11-
Our first doctor’s appointment! Met with Dr. Alecia Graves from
Advocates for Women’s Health in Louisville. We were able to talk to her
about diet, exercise, etc. and were sent in for our very first sonogram!
It was so incredible seeing this living being inside me complete with
heartbeat, umbilical cord and even stubs of legs and arms. The tech even
changed it to 3D for us and we were able to make out facial features
including the beginning of eyes! God is indeed so amazing in his
creation of life. Less than the size of long grain rice and yet full of
life already. It was a special moment for us realizing we are indeed
parents already.
