(In an attempt to revive the blog, we are going to begin posting some
key milestones from the pregnancy on the blog as we await the arrival
of our little girl!)
The Scare
On Thanksgiving Day, Nov 24, 2011, the Ginn household was buzzing with activity. Not only were we having some friends from California over for a "Asian Thanksgiving" lunch, but we were also planning on telling the Ginn family the good news that Cami was pregnant later that night. After a delicious Thanksgiving lunch of both "traditional" Thanksgiving food and various delicious Asian side dishes, we headed over to Ryan and Natalie's to eat even more food and play some games.
Right before we walked out of the door to get in the car, Cami used the bathroom and noticed some light "spotting" or bleeding. Once we got to Ryan and Natalie's, Cami used the bathroom again and informed me that the "spotting" had worsened and that the blood looked bright red. We knew that aside from the ER, there was no way we would make it to any doctor on Thanksgiving Day, so we decided to wait until Monday to go in since there was nothing that really could be done if the baby was lost or safe. The bleeding continued throughout the rest of the weekend and on Sunday, was accompanied by some slight cramping.
When we went in for our appointment on Monday morning, we expected the worse. Most websites indicated that 50% of women who "spot" during the first trimester have lost their babies. They also indicate that if "spotting" is accompanied by cramping, it is very likely that a miscarriage has occurred. I was all but sure that the baby had been lost, but Cami had a gut feeling that the baby was still alive.
After a few minutes, they called us in to do a sonogram. Immediately the baby flashed up on the screen and the sonogram technician said happily, "There's your baby!" Cami and I looked at each other and asked, "Is
it...alive???" She smiled and said, "Yep, there's the heartbeat!" She pushed a
couple buttons and over the speakers came the distinct sound of our baby's heartbeat. Not only that, as we were watching the image on the screen and listening to the heartbeat...the baby
started to move around! We went from expecting the worse -- a miscarriage -- to being able to hear the baby's heartbeat and watch the baby move around!
It turned out that Cami had some slight hemorrhaging near her cervix which isn't normal, but as the doctor reminded us, is not atypical. She assured us that this hemorrhaging would not harm the baby and that the bleeding would go away within the next few days. Sure enough, a few days later, the bleeding had abated.
Throughout those four days, we were constantly reminded that the life of our little baby -- be it ten weeks old and still in the womb or ten years old and running around at the park -- is entirely in the hands of a sovereign and good God. Psalm 119:68 is indeed a firm foundation: You are good and do good; teach me your statutes.
